addictive show despite viewer knowledge

Tonight I was watching Celebrity Poker Showdown on NBC (usually on Bravo). Strangely addicting... even though I know nothing about poker. Bravo as a whole is strangely addictive in many aspects... Queer Eye is entertaining, as is this... but more on that another day.

God Yul! Merry Christmas! Feliz Navidad! Joyoux Noel!

Long time, no post. I know, I know... I'm slacking. Well, considering what has been going on, it's no wonder!!
Well, Christmas was nice. My aunt and uncle came on Christmas Day and we had a big feast. It was a nice time. I got some great gifts (gave some great ones too, I must add!) and I get to go and pick out a GUITAR! woo hoo! :) Better go and search for a good one at a good price here before I make way to the store!
...but now it is off to shopping with mom... well, it all depends on whether or not there is parking available. If not, it may just be a drive with mom! :)

Emotional Hangover...

Well, the concerts are done. Today I feel like a limp dishrag. (yes, that is an accurate description of how I feel!) Everything went really well... even considering the first grader who threw up all over the floor after the first song. (and his classmate who didn't make it to the gym at all because he threw up in the classroom!) But everyone enjoyed it anyway, and things are looking up with only tomorrow, Monday and half of Tuesday before WINTER BREAK! Woo hoo!

Wednesday, December 10, 2003

Two down, four (five?) to go....

So, I'm about 1/3 through the concert-conducting of the season. My middleschoolers did a great job both this morning and tonight. Tomorrow is the 1st grade concert for the Golden Age Club, then next Tuesday am my 4th/5th Graders go to the elementary, then Wednesday am at their school, a final 1st dress rehearsal for the elementary audience that afternoon, then the parent's concert in the evening. (Wednesday will be a tough day!) But it is good to have some of it behind me, anyway!

What color are you?

you are deepskyblue
#00BFFF

Your dominant hues are cyan and blue. You like people and enjoy making friends. You're conservative and like to make sure things make sense before you step into them, especially in relationships. You are curious but respected for your opinions by people who you sometimes wouldn't even suspect.

Your saturation level is very high - you are all about getting things done. The world may think you work too hard but you have a lot to show for it, and it keeps you going. You shouldn't be afraid to lead people, because if you're doing it, it'll be done right.

Your outlook on life is very bright. You are sunny and optimistic about life and others find it very encouraging, but remember to tone it down if you sense irritation.

Snow totals

Well, it did snow. A lot. It still is, actually. We must have about 9 inches. It's beautiful... and I got to christen my baby jeep in the snow!! :) I love 4wd! But with all of the cold and blowing, it is still better to be inside with a warm drink and cozy clothes on. Ah, gotta love the snow-day mentality!

Let it snow???

Well, we might get a noreaster storm this weekend.... but then again, the weatherpeople are all hyped up, which usually means two flakes, if that much. So, who knows. I'll keep ya'll posted. :)

I am slowly learning the allure of online shopping. Got some stuff online already for Christmas, since the amazing amount of concert-ing keeps me from wanting to deal with more self-inflicted stress in a store. Don't like shipping costs, though. Not cool.

The Turkey Aftermath...

Well, I was not one of the people who was insane and up at 5:30 to shop on Friday.... the opposite was pretty much true. Yes, I did some shopping, but very little, and NONE at either of the two gigundo shopping malls near me.

Thanksgiving was fine... fourteen people at my sister's house, much chaos, tons of food, you know how it is. Other than that and the little shopping, not much happened. I proctored three tests for a homeschooled freshman, babysat my little friend Katie and went out to dinner with the folks. Too bad work brings the chaos of mucho mucho rehearsals and stress until Dec. 17 is over!!!!!

Ode to a Turkey

The turkey is a funny bird
His head goes wobble, wobble.
And he knows just one word:
Gobble, Gobble, Gobble!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! :)

What I am Most Thankful For...

Today, I am most thankful for dental insurance. Why, you may ask? Partial coverage on things such as a $150 filling is a blessing in itself! (Stupid teeth. Why did you have to get screwy on me once the parents stopped paying the bills?!)

weekend

Kirsten was here on Saturday and stayed over. It was a fun shopping day and hanging out time. Watched "The Quiet American" last night. Good, but a lot of thinking for a late night movie. Among other things today, went to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx for dinner and bought Italian cookies and a cannoli at the bakery... YUM! :)

Happiness in a red striped envelope

I got some happiness in the mail today from Massachusetts. A Strawberry Shortcake lip-balm-necklace! What joy! I hope that the happiness that I sent in return will be there tomorrow or Saturday by the latest. It is all in the hands of the postal service. If this works successfully, I will unleash the joy of happiness-mailing to anyone else who wants to try it out! :)

right on,smacky!

Yes, Rebecca is right... (such a smartie!) George and Rachel are goldfish. They died when their fishbowl fell to the floor and broke.

Riddle me this......

Found an old favorite book of my childhood in the basement titled "Unriddling" by Alvin Schwartz. So in honor of the book, here is the RIDDLE OF THE DAY...

THE TELLTALE PUDDLE
When George and Rachel were found, they both were dead. They were lying in a puddle of water. There was broken glass all around them. What had happened???

Leave any guesses in the comment box! :)

GRRR....

Having to write grades on 15 classes worth of report cards (approx. 300 individual cards) is awful. Especially when you have teachers hounding you to finish... when you have literally had no time and you technically have until the end of the day on Thursday! Don't do that to me. They will be done when they are supposed to be done. Live with it.

I LOVE HOME!!

I am so happy to be home. SO HAPPY you don't even know.
This trip was so hard on so many levels. Visiting my grandfather in a nursing home, my grandmother living alone when she really shouldn't be, the medical issues, the codependancy issues, the lonliness issues, etc. It is heartbreaking to see them like this. There are lots of big questions about the grandparents that need to be answered yesterday, but no good answers. It's frustrating to make such an effort and feel as if you've accomplished nothing.

ER adventure

So last night after watching ER, my mom, grandmother and I were getting ready for bed.... and my grandmother fell in her bathroom. She was hysterical and poor mom rushed in there partially dressed to help her... she was bleeding from a gash on her hand, one on her leg and a small cut on her nose. So we called the EMT's... they came and checked her out. They were thorough and noticed that her wrist was swolen and tender and so suggested that we drive her to the hospital to get an xray. So we got into the car at midnight and I drove to the hospital... 16 miles on a dark backroad with ENORMOUS pockets of fog that you couldn't see through. It was a nightmare and scary as anything. Luckily, we got there and there was no one there... she could walk right in. (the night before there had been 40 people in there with chest pain!) Well, thankfully, the wrist wasn't broken and so we drove back (through worse fog) and got back at 3am. Long night. Thank God that we were there when she fell, though - she really shouldn't be alone.

Who says young love is best?

Went to a wedding today, down here in Florida. Friends of my grandparents got married today. Both are in their mid-80's. They were both married before and widdowed, and met, became friends, and fell in love. He brought her flowers, took her to doctor's appointments, doted on her and won her heart. So he bought a brand-new house in the village with a full time maid for her and they got married. It was really sweet and touching to see.

I'm leaving, on a jet plane.....

So tomorrow it's off to Florida. zip zip and away! I'll try to post while I am there, but hopefully you can live with the separation anxiety if a reliable internet connection cannot be found. :) Ciao!

For those of you who know the "miss president cell phone number" and/or email and care to reach me, feel free! As long as there is no roaming going on, I won't be out of touch!

tired and cranky

So after a not so impressive weekend I am packing for Florida. Wish I was going to Disney World... the most fun I will probably have is the dollar store and Wally World (Wal-Mart) in Live Oak. Woohoo! Well, going is the important point in this trip, not fun. The grandparents need some love. :)

Other than that, my costume was a big success on Friday and I saw my little friend on Saturday night. Hadn't had a chance to see her in a while.

Oh! Almost forgot! Soon there will be much sharing of happiness from Miss President to you! Check out the October 28 post on the Wood website to see how it works. Smacky is going to fill me in and we'll send each other some happiness and then I'll unleash the floodgates of snail-mail happiness to all! :)

Costume parts, New York and Laryngitis

Due to the diligence of Bob, a dear friend and coworker of mom, I have scrubs for my doctor costume! Hurrah! :)

Too bad that I will be a doctor who needs to see a doctor on Friday if I don't get my voice back! Very hard to teach songs with no voice. Reminds me of a year ago (minus one week) when a very sick me was part of a lovely wedding... thanking her lucky stars that she did not have to sing or speak at the event!

lastly, a comment about tonight's Ed: No, Ed! Don't move to New York! Don't sell Stuckeybowl! You'll want it back!

oh, the anticipation...

As we all know, Halloween falls on a Friday this year. This is a good thing... children will go trick-or-treating on Friday and have all weekend to be sugared up, leaving no candy or sugar left for the school week. (this means subdued children who have crashed from sugar highs). However, the anticipation of Friday has already begun and will become more frantic as the week progresses............ help!

Neurotic miss president

ok, so this head lice thing has really gotten to me... in a mental sense, not a physical one. I feel like I have things crawling around my scalp!!! ...shiver... I was checked at work and then I've had my mom look, too... and I have gotten to the point of research and everything. Two sites that will let you know anything you needed (and didn't need) to know about my new neurosis: Headlice.org and Harvard School of Public Health

...am I really crazy, or do I just feel crazy?

Friday, October 24, 2003

been a while....

wow. long time no post.
After an incredibly insane week (mostly due to the incredible outbreak of head lice found at my school... nothing makes you more of a hypocondriac than little itchy heads!!!) I was thrilled to get a call from Alisa, business girl extrodinaire. We went bowling... although not at Stuckeybowl, as I dream of! I was consistant, bowling an 86 both games. The guy who gave us our shoes was a retired instrumental music teacher and still-professional drummer. Small world!!

Black Jack gum and Bitter Orange Soda

I went into the local 7-11 near where I work the other day and discovered that they had "Black Jack" gum in stock. This is a type of licorice gum that only comes out occasionally near the holidays. It used to be more common, I guess, when my dad was a kid - it is a memory of his childhood and we all know that if it is ever seen, it is to be bought. So I bought all that the dear 7-11 had.... all 36 packages. The guy who owns the 7-11 found me really amusing and said he was going to order more for me. Gold star for the favorite daughter!! :)
Now if we can only discover where to get Schweppe's Bitter Orange soda. You can find Bitter Lemon in the US, but the only place he's found the orange in recent years was in Italy. I wonder if they would ship it here by crate.........

guitars and Christopher Columbus

Happy Columbus Day! I am so happy for holidays like these, even though I was nowhere near as productive as initially thought. O well.

First night of my guitar class was tonight. Learned three chords, one of which I already knew. Very slow moving, but what do you expect from a community school with most people who have never held a guitar before?! Still, I know it will be good for me, and possibly useful for work, too. My fingers are sore!

Dusting off the passport....

Well, one can dream!! Spent some quality learning time tonight with the Discovery channel and the trio of We Built This City shows. Saw most of Paris, all of New York, and most of London. Very interesting - from the earliest history through to the present and cool computer images showing modernity superimposed with history. V.cool. Check it out. Makes me wish I was in London... better keep up with the Beast-bank collection of coins ao I can dust off the passport for real!!!

double feature!

Went out tonight and saw Under the Tuscan Sun - very good (amazing cinematographic shots of Italy!!!!), but the book was only a loose (very loose) guide. (Still need to finish the book, which I am enjoying.) Then, I came home and watched the dvd I bought earlier today - Down With Love - which I adore. That movie makes me want to wear lots of pink and hats and gloves!

P.S. to SFD, Jr in case he ever reads this: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Tiles and Hogwarts professors

Hurrah, the tiles came! Now the floor is all the same and the project is almost complete. Need to nail on the floor molding again and the doorjam and put that rubbery kickplate stuff underneath the cabinets. I am so tired of the tiling saga.

In unrelated news, Emma Thompson is going to be in the third HP movie. I heard it on the radio this am and couldn't figure out who she would be until I read this and then, of course, it made perfect sense. I enjoyed a funny thought due to the comment at the end of the article about her and ex Kenneth Branagh - could one imagine Trelawney and Lockhart as a couple?! Random thought.

Hurrah for Yom Kippur!

Yes, I know that it is the day of atonement, holiest day of the Jewish calendar. But since I'm not Jewish, it means DAY OFF FROM SCHOOL! woo hoo! So nice to have a 3-day weekend.
So... Was supposed to see people onSaturday, but it didn't fly. I thought I'd see Kirsten today, but she's sick. For a weekend that was supposed to be busy, it wasn't. But tonight will be cool. Mom and I are going to this "friends-of-the-library" thing for a town nowhere near here - they are hosting a night at the local Macy's. We get a fashion show, makeover (I'm going to Mac), consultation with a personal shopper and something else for $20! Yay!

New in the sidebar....

Decided to add a new sidebar feature for books. Didn't go about making links or anything. I'm always reading so many different things at once. Technically still reading Quarterlife Crisis too.

Other thought - PRW: You mentioned someting new/cool I can do with my blog a million years ago. What was it? Email/IM and let me know or something. I also want to learn to put in pictures/images, if I can!!

We'll take Manhattan.....

Well, thought I would be there today, possibly visiting with three college friends - Kirsten, Kate and Sonia. But when everyone seems to be waiting for someone else to make a move in terms of organization, nothing happens. So I'll most likely see Kirsten on Monday (I LOVE Jewish holidays!) for some shopping-therapy and instead spent time with mom today. Good anyway, since I still am not over this blasted cold!

PS to Smacky: Thanks for the card! It came today - you made my day! psst.... ten buck$ if you call that man Mommy!

Thursday

Watched Ed last night as always, and also West Wing. Brain was still a little too fuzzy to fully concentrate on all that went on with the latter, but at least Zoey is back alive. I didn't think she would be.

How sad that my life is all about television. I need a social life that extends beyond stupid Happy hour after work....

S I C K D A Y

yep. sick. Nasty nasty head cold, so today was my first ever sick day from work. Woo hoo! I've really been sick since Sunday... but dragged myself to work yesterday where I was told "your glands are the size of golf balls." So no work today. :) Slept, watched "Bend it Like Beckham" (first day released!) and vegged. Feeling better now, but I know I will be slow still. I was so happy to be able to relax and feel completely justified in it.

Can't believe I haven't written in a week. ER was great - I love the new girl from "Beckham," am sad about Luka, and frustrated with Carter... but hurray for Gallant the doctor!!! The weekend was fine. Saw my cute Brittish children and tried to finish the kitchen tiling.... only to find out we are less than 7 tiles short. AHHHHH! No one has these tiles anymore, so we might have to substitute. (I did measure correctly, fyi - we had originally intended to use these tiles in both bathrooms before we found nice tile underneath the crap. We just never bothered to recount the tiles when we started the kitchen.) frustration!

wEDnesday

still busy peeling off tiles on the kitchen floor, making the house a disaster...but I think we're actually close to the end!

***SPOILER ALERT*** if you have taped premieres this week and not viewed them yet, don't read the following!!! ***ALERT!!***

So.... Gilmore Girls - I was so worried about the Luke thing, but it is not as bad as I thought. And Ed, who I am still so in love with was good, and there was a girl that Eli called JENNIFAIR!!!! West Wing: so full of tension... we still don't know if Zoey is dead or alive! Oh, the suspense!!! And tomorrow's ER.... someone dead! And it looks like Keri in an upside-down car that is about to be slammed! And more Carter-Abby tension! Oh, the drama! Oh, the angst!

Monday, September 22, 2003

preview week!

there is joy for the television junkie! Preview week! Watched 7th Heaven for mom (good) and then Everwood (which I love more and more!) Even though I have other commitments tomorrow night, I will tape Gilmore Girls. (what's this about Luke married?!?!) Then Wednesday brings the favorite ED (although I thought the teaser commercial tag was cheezy...) and West Wing (and L&O, which I won't stay up for sadly!). Thursday is ER (dance of joy!) and maybe Friends... oh, hurrah! And no, although I have been amused in the past, I will not be tuning in to the Bachelor this time around....

Saturday, September 20, 2003

gold star for me!

Oooh! Look at the cool Knitty.com link in the sidebar! I put it in there myself! Aren't you proud of me??? :)

weekend

it has already been a productive weekend. We didn't see too much of Isabel (lots of rain and wind, but nothing too crazy). Friday night went out with the girls from work to celebrate a birthday at an Irish pub. Loud, dark and smoky, but whatever. I was social!! Then today, mom and I have been tackling the vinyl-sticker-tiles. Got up over 32 of them (18 tile section times two layers of tile. Probably 1/3 of what needs to be done.) which took most of the day. Now time to kick back, actually work on my Bermuda scrapbook, and watch Miss America... which always makes me feel patriotic, as I look at girls who are a little too beautiful for everyday life. Ah, the American dream!

Thursday, September 18, 2003

Isabel.... Isabel, where art thou?

Supposedly, Isabel is coming. Still all we have is wind and cloudy humidity. All of the states south and east of good 'ol NJ are "state of emergency"... but not us. If it were true, it would translate into "NO WORK TOMORROW!" ...alas, I will have to drive in the torrential rain and wind tomorrow and travel between buildings, too. Joy.

Wednesday, September 17, 2003

television junkie...

...yeah, that describes it. Looking forward to premiere week for everything - including some that are not on my link list - Everwood, West Wing, even Friends. But especially the favorites - ED and ER! Funny that my two faves are each only 2 letters long and start with e.... he he!

Public Television and the Library...

I love free - stupid things that you can get as giveaways make me happy. Late night on public television they show good teaching shows... taped "Jazz Heroes 1-3" this morning at 3:13am (no kidding about the time!). Next Saturday I'll catch the rest. Today, a local library had their once-a-month used book sale. Bought six old knitting magazines for $2 (normally $5.99 each in the store!), a bunch of children's books -10 to be exact - for $4 and another cool book for 75 cents. Rock on!
Another fun freebie experience: Start Sampling

Blah blah blah....

Since no one commented on the links and whether or not they work, I can assume that no one is reading my site... not that millions ever did. So no one will care that I lost a roll of film that had pre-vacation and beginning-of-vacation pictures on it. Grrr! :{

Movie

Saw "Seabiscuit" tonight. Loved it - a real soaring-music-great-American-epic type. I love going to the movies. I don't know what it is... the dark, the enormous screen, the surround-sound... but I love it.

HTML OK?

Added some new links to the site. Check some of them out to see if I did a good job, will you? :) Thanks!

Hello Pot? This is the Kettle. You're black!

Had to go pick up a carton of milk at the supermarket this evening. The guy on line before us proceeded to ramble on and on and on about all of the bad things that were floating around in/a part of the skim milk we intented to buy (pus, estrogen, growth hormones, bacteria, etc, etc... he seriously sounded like he was quoting scientific studies). Makes you feel really good about what you're buying and drinking, right? Well, take it with a grain of salt. This man was buying nasty white bread and the only six-pack I saw was the one he was purchasing - a six pack of caffinated, sugary Coca-cola. So yes, I think the Pot needs to realize that he should not speak to the kettle without looking in the mirror first!

Labor Day 2003

What a rainy, chilly day today! Nothing much got done, mom except removing the rest of the yucky sticker-tiles from the floor in the upstairs bathroom (what a difference!), hanging pictures that have sat in a box for three years and making a quick stop at the mall to exchange pants (dad's) and buy a shirt (me). I love the fact that Labor day (or Labour Day, as it is in Bermuda!) is very non-laborious.

Work tomorrow.... GRRR!

Sunday, August 31, 2003

OUCH!

Today was a lazy day, due to that wierd coincidence that one is exhausted after coming home from a relaxing vacation! Mom, dad and I went for a picnic at one of our favorite old houses/parks not far from here and it was lovely, except for whatever it was that bit my leg. At first, I thought a bee had stung me, but there was no stinger... and it was on my leg for longer than a quick prick. (however, all I know is that it was black - maybe a wasp bit me???) It hurt like a MOTHER! There were people nearby us, enjoying nature, who all promptly left when they heard me screaming (actual quote) "AHHHHH! SOMETHING BIT ME!! AHHHH! IT HURTS!!!!" (Yes, I have a low pain tolerance, but this hurt!) Strange thing is, hours later, it still twinges.......

Back to Reality????

Why am I home again? The trip was amazing... beautiful weather, beautiful beautiful Bermuda, great food, lots to do, shopping, beaches, mountain biking (on the island, not the ship!). Celebrity Cruise Line is really a good one - the people are incredible, they make you feel right at home. We even got an invitation to eat with the Cheif Engineer! (very cool, I must tell you!) and were also invited to a formal tea. I'll miss the pampering and vacationy-goddess feeling... dare I think about the fact that I have to WORK on Tuesday? Oh, the inconvience!!!!! I should just call work and tell them I am moving to Bermuda!!!!!

Bon Voyage!

By tomorrow at this time, I will be eating dinner on top of the ocean! :) Packing is almost done and I am terribly excited. Buh-bye normalcy! Hello, fabulous! Miss you!

Some people are too smart!

I am learning so much about html and all that it takes through this site. I was proud of myself to be able to put a link to the crazy-head picture, but it ended up being pink print on a pink background... and no one could see it! The computer guru saw that and tried to teach me (over IM, no less) how to fix it. I tried... but failed! So he came in and saved the day. Thanks! :)

Boxtops and Labels For Education

Because I'm so concerned about the workplace, I collect the General Mills Boxtops and the Campbell's Labels for Education. I'm such a crazy about it that I've got everyone involved - my parents, my dear friends... and today I get a photo from Peter's phone about one that he collected off of some Milano cookies. (I collected several from the Wood's this weekend, terrorizing several boxes of cereal and cake mixes for the small cutouts) How nice to have people who remember things like that for you! :)

Two more days!!

Two more days, two more days, tra la laaaa, tra la laaa.... Bermuda, here I come! I absolutely can't wait until I get to see the ocean off the deck (I can't say "out the window" because I won't have one!) and sink my toes into pink sand! :)

Stuckeyville spotting!!

While driving home from the supermarket tonight, I passed Ed's house - and they were there! Lights and trucks and people - didn't see Ed or Carol or anyone, but that doesn't matter. I practically stopped the car dead in the road (don't think the guy behind me liked it much!). Wish I could have gone to visit! Hurrah!!

Trailer Trash??

Ok, so I went to work today to reorganize my office after the big move out of the old space. Now I am in a trailer, and the jokes have already started. Uy vey! Well, at least my new schedule is looking better than last year! Thank heaven for small favors!

Why "Miss President"????

Why am I Miss President? Well, for some reason my last name (which isn't very hard to pronounce - unless you're a telemarketer) is difficult for some kindergarteners to remember/phonate/understand... thus, I became Miss President. I guess it sounded close enough to them. We'll see if they get it right now that they are moving to first grade.

june fourteenth

fyi - if you don't already know this (and I guess that most people reading actually do know me) june fourteenth is my favorite holiday - Flag Day.
[Look at me - "most people reading this" - assuming that there must be millions of people reading this. Yeah, I'm that popular.]
On Friday, I went on a little day-trip to Martha's Vinyard with rebecca. I've been there before, but never during the summer, believe it or not. It was a perfect day, complete with fireworks! Pictures (well, the two we took on the digital camera) are forthcoming, but until then, check out this website of MV and see if it inspires you!
Hello world! This is my first post and it was made possible by the help of my dear friend rebecca, who is the goddess of html (at least in my opinion!). Thank you smacky!!! :)
